Welcome to Good Samaritan Home for the Aged (GSHA)

Genesis

Kanyakumari Rural Development Society abbreviated as KARD is the outcome of the initiative of persons committed to the integrated development of the downtrodden. But we are very clear from the very begining that the community shall take care of the target group. ‘Taking Care’ here refers to the participation of and the contribution by the community.
Thus the focal print of our strategy is community Contributed Rehabilitation of the abandoned elderly people. The idea behind Community Contributed. Rehabilitation concept is that the affection and recognition accorded by the family particularly the children contribute to a great extent towards the socio physical and cultural development of the elderly people.
The rich and the upper middle class people can afford trained nurses to look after their elderly mother/father. But these elderly people loose the cordial relationship with the other members of the family. But in the case of the lower middle class and the lower class elderly people the situation is entirely different. They are totally neglected and left in the streets. They wander without food, medical care and at time without proper dress. Many a times they are mentally affected and go for begging.

The Vision

The Vision of KARD is to motivate the community people to contribute and participate in the Community Contributed Rehabilitation program of the elderly people.

The Mission Focus

  • That all the persons are created equal.
  • The elderly people also deserve concern and love.
  • The Community has a moral responsibility to look after the needs and problems of the elderly people.

We started the Good Samaritan Home for the Aged with this mission and vision to rehabilitate the abandoned elderly people. One of our sponsors contributed by donating a building to run the program. We provide residential care in this building to the elders who are wandering about in the streets of our area. These elderly people are brought to our Home by the well wishers, officials of various department (Viz) Police, Social Welfare and service organisation like Lions Club, Rotary Club, religious groups etc.

Target Area/People

KARD is concentrating on the rehabilitation of othopadically and mentally disabled persons in three blocks of Kanyakumari district. We have been running three special schools (one residential and two daycare) all for the mentally challenged children.
The target people-both children and adults hail from poor families but neglected to deprivation and depravity due to either ignorance or poverty. Some of them are even chained in the backyard or left to begging for their day today survival. Many parents are in a vexed state of mind that they leave their mentally disabled child uncared at home, either chained or locked up in a room. Those parents who are employed could not look after their special child at home. They find it very difficult to manage their special child by employing a servant maid, even though they are well to do. Hence they either chain their special child or lock them up in a room during day time, till they return back from their job. These special children starve and are isolated till evening and the result is these child becomes violent and highly disturbed.

Our Intervention

Now we have launched in to the rehabilitation of the elderly people. We started the Good Samaritan Home for the Aged with this mission and vision to rehabilitate the abandoned elderly people. With the voluntary contribution of a house by one of our local sponsors we have started this home for the elderly mothers with the name Good Samaritan Home for the Aged. This home is located near the Medical College Hospital, Asaripallam, Nagercoil. We have facilities for 25 inmates to stay in this home. We provide residential care in this building to the elders who are wandering about in the streets of our area. We admit only abandoned and the residential care needed mothers in this home. These elderly people are brought to our Home by the well wishers, officials of various department (Viz) Police, Social Welfare and service organisation like Lions Club, Rotary Club, religious groups etc. We provide round the clock care, medical care and also, recreation facilities. The sick and the medical intervention needed mothers were given treatment. We request you to visit our Homes for the Elderly people and give your coments and suggestions to improve our quality of service to the elderly people.

Our Constraints

The present buildings are not sufficient to accommodate request needed elderly mothers. We need to construct buildings and also we need to make arrangements for their beds-cots, mattress, self etc. Nonavailability of a four wheeler vehicle is a major constraint. The elderly people often get sick and they need to be shifted to the hospital and the bring them back. Often we receive calls form the sponsors offering food, cloths etc., and we have to collect them form their houses.
